Recon Rudel

Post by stormbringer3 »

Has anyone ever played him enough to get a second hero to offset one of his weaknesses? Would it just be a wasted slot to constantly use him?
Thanks for any opinions.

It's something I have thought about and am curious about as well. It would be a fun experiment but ultimately it would probably be a wasted slot to keep deploying such a handicapped unit. Theoretically you could have a situation where you are unlucky and do not receive the second hero until you reach 1000 kills and by then the war is probably over ... :D

However, if you get the second hero around 300 kills then maybe he could be somewhat useful...

I used the air recon extensively in my previous Manstein Grand Campaign playthrough, Actually i got +2 attack hero then +1 spotting 3rd hero.....

Its very usefull unit but very fragile and it cost me several thousands to repair him. Now i dont use it in my current GC because ground spotting units do the job. Kercher +5 spotting, rekon +4 S and Krad +4 S

For spotting he is helpful but requires protection, so actually high opportunity cost... one slot plus fighter slot IMHO

I think weak rudel is quite useful as long as
1) you convert him to the fighter bomber quite early on, this gives you an extra spotting and also this gives you an extra 'fighter' to finish off enemy units with just one or two strength. He can rack up quite an impressive number of unit kills.
2) Dont deploy him in every scenario, some are just too hot in the air.
In an AAR GC east I did a long time ago I made a record of number of times he is used:
41: 7 times as a BF110
42: 9 times
43: 6 times as an Me410a
44: 5 times as an Me410a
I didnt actually finish it so I didnt do 45.
There are a few scenarios where his extreeme spotting ability is essential/invaluable e.g. stalingrad docks.
He is also essential for a quick win e.g. 8 turns in the last berlin scenario. although he gets killed quickly he is used to spot the three generals/field marshall so they can be destroyed very quickly.
