3R in its day was a terrific game!

No strategic game has come anywhere near it.

Absolutely agree. The best game I have ever played and still playing.

3R

Oh yes- Third Reich. As a grand strategy game, it has (in my opinion) never been surpassed. Whatever one may think of it, the basic mechanics of the game were very simple; the sequence of play was far more complex, but readily learned by those who focused on actually reading the rules. I would not characterize it as an easy game to learn; but those who did learn it were rewarded with a wonderful blend of grand strategy and historical what-ifs. Some have compared it to chess; in my opinion, this game was far more complex than will or can ever be. The sheer number of possible moves even in one turn guarantees that.

I wanted to point out to those of you who liked the game (and who may not be aware of the following) that Avalon Hill released "Rising Sun", the pacific theater version of Third Reich. Additionally, GMT Games released the combined version of Third Reich and Rising Sun in their product called "A World At War". It is available for sale today, and has first class, state-of-the-art components. Additionally, the design has been produced and fine tuned by Bruce Harper (The primary original designer). You can purchase it at www.gmtgames.com and costs 175.00 dollars. I understand that a project is underway to produce a computer version of the game that would at first be PBM only, with a later add-on for an enhanced AI for single player play.

My apologies to Slitherine for the emphasis on a non-Slitherine game; I don't work for GMT- I just loved the game and wanted to let other folks in on it's current availability.

I will wait for the PC version. It is now 18 months since it was announced and I predict it to be vapourware :(

Latest news to my knowledge was that developers still looking for engine. I am afraid that we will never see this game done. It is a shame that none on this planet don??™t want to make A3R computer version of the game or remake of 3R or, at least, to make new patch for old 3R computer version to fix bugs, improve AI and to adapt it for PBEM style much more.

We don't mind discussion of other games, but can we keep it to the General Discussion threads and not mix it in with our games. Thanks.

I am looking forward to a good computer game at this scale. It has been too many years since I have had my War in Europe game setup, and I am definately hoping that Commander can bring back the good old days of war gaming without having to lay on the North Sea to move pieces

ROFL, SPI's War in the East was like that; four huge maps, and you risked putting your back out trying to lean across to move units in the middle.

And good luck finding a table big enough. Back in the day, I was young enough to play on the floor in an empty spare bedroom. These days, that down-on-the-floor business would kill me. Not the getting down there, the getting back up again!

Can't wait to play this game, I am definitely in a mood for it

Can we expect an october diary or does the game is near completion? However if it takes more time because the devs decided to add "flavour" to the game I can wait a little longer :)

Yes, you can expect at leist one diary update per months. However, the game will not come out in 2006 so I would not want to give you any false hope for that :)

Later on when we set the release date we want, in contrary to most other companies, to be at leist 95% sure that we can keep that date.

Well, I am interested in this game because I, too loved third reich and the concept and have also looked at AWAW and used some of its ideas in my own home grown game, which is way more detailed than most people like to play but I enjoy it. I want a game like this precisely because it would be nice to have something where the game is made and does not require the huge amount of work mine does. If anyone is interested they can email me about it, but essentially I use a grand strategy game like this - but done manually via spreadsheets - to simulate the strategic part of the game - divisions (3:1 scale), armies, diplomacy (which is modeled on the AWAW diplomacy), economics, and logistics and then the actual combat is done with PG II engine - where each battle models your forces, so a Division will be for example 6 units in an infantry division, 3 infantry, artillery, and optionally anti-tank and aa.

However, this looks good if it can be a good simulation, and I like the PG I-type look, - I like stuff to look good but without unnecessary graphics. The worst failure I ever saw was Gary Grigsby's World at War, where the graphics were not only so bad they crashed constantly, but also looked uglier than even much, much, simpler graphics would have looked!

We'd love to John, but we are still working on a few glitches before we can start the beta test. This means it's not going to make it out before Christmas. We want to make sure we've playtested the single and multiplayer versions properly to get a good balance before we release. There is still time to sign up for the beta though!

I probably was one of the first to sign up for beta testing. I understand you can't have everyone be a tester, but I'd sure like to be one of the lucky ones, especially since I'd need a Mac version. Make sure I'm one the list that you throw darts at as a means of picking your testers.

Throw darts? No, no, no, didn't you get the memo?

Playtesters will be selected by a karaoke contest. Each prospective tester will be required to down 3 british pints of beer, then sing along to a randomly chosen 80's pop song...
