Field of Glory comes to your PC!

Post by IainMcNeil »

Last year saw the arrival of the hugely anticipated Field of Glory© set of wargames rules. Now translated into all major European languages, the rules have appeared on the shelves of bookstores across the world. To date sales have exceeded 200.000 copies and FOG releases comprise 9 additional Companion Books, with 4 more in production to complete this popular series.

Fans worldwide have praised the quality and realism of this production which is created by Wargames specialists Slitherine and distributed by military history book specialists Osprey Publishing. Over 50,000 posts on the FOG forums and an ever growing community of fans have built on the success of the original system and now Forum members are contributing towards FOG’s expansion into the Renaissance and Napoleonic eras.
The Field of Glory brand has become so popular within the wargaming community, that the brand is now supporting a range of wargaming products such as specially designed FOG terrain from manufacturers Miniature Worldmaker.
Slitherine is therefore proud to announce the Field of Glory videogame, specially created with figure gaming fans in mind. This is the latest production coming from the Kameleon Project talent incubator. The Field of Glory strategy game is made by wargamers specifically for wargaming fans.
Developed by UK Developer Hexwar, the games is turn based and set during the Rise of Rome, from Zama in North Africa to the battles of Boudicca’s revolt in Britain.

The game's main features are:
• Gameplay that allows key decisions to decide the results of historical battles
• Detailed and accurate depiction of ancient warfare
• 12 historical battles with hundreds of units to control
• Play as Rome, Carthage, Gaul, Germanic Tribes and the Spartacus Slave Revolt and even the Roman civil war
• Single and 2 player head to head modes
• Comprehensive scenario builder included

Later releases will include additional battle packs and an army designer where players will be able to choose their favourite armies and match their skills against opponents of their choice, on an almost infinite selection of battle fields.

I have mixed feelings on this

For sure it may be a great idea to bring the game to a bigger audience.
But as 'real' player I'm afraid the game rules will be not as detailed as they are in the real game, and so people used to play the game online may not be playing it as tabletop as well.
Also having (only) 12 possible armies may leed into a situation that after a while additional softwarepackage can be purchased to have more armies, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I also like playing computergames, but after I have spend lots of money for the boardgame I#m not sure if I will spend the same (and more) also for a computergame.

Let's see what will come out.

For sure I'd like to help on beta-testing ;)

I'd love this and can't wait. My talbetop FOG army is slowly nearing completion, but I just don't have a lot of opportunity to devote a whole night to a real game. It doesn't help that FOG is alread a long game compared to what I am accustomed to (FOW) and FOG also has to compete with the other good games (Epic, FOW) for those scarce nights.

An electronic version would be brilliant, I could save single player games and play multi-player into the small hours of the morning without having to be cop the wife and kids' long faces for running off to play toy soliders :D

I'm quite positve that this being a 'Rise of Rome' release, more are envisaged. However, depending on the pricepoint this may or may not be a problem.

I really like the sound of this!

I can't find the time for ehm "unplugged" tabletop gaming anymore, so this would be a great solution for me! Sure it will be tricky to pull off, but Slitherine and Hexwar both have a lot of experience in online and offline wargames. If anyone can pull this one off, its them!

Look forward to following the development on this new title!

Just to give a few details - the game will not be an exact recreation of the tabletop system. It will be based on it with impact, melee, movement, cohesion, but all developed for the PC to make teh most of what the PC offers and not be constrained by the tabletop design. The game will be hex based rather than fre form to keep it easy to play. Beta testing will be starting soon!

Looks good I really enjoy Totalwar style games, but the 'realtime' battles become monotonous after a while. The electronic wargame I have enjoyed the most is actually a PS2 game by KOEI, turn based and played on a grid. There's just something about the 'gaminess' of grid/hex based games that really works well IMO and the right electronic game (clean interface is key!) can do some brilliant things with that format.

Free Relationship Advice

Sounds to me like you are not keeping everybody busy enough. In the evenings I send my wife off to her job so that she is not in my hair and i can have my freinds over to play games. On her days off I keep her busy mowing the lawns, washing the trucks etc. If that does not keep her busy I have tackle other chores like felling trees, painting the house insde and out and so on. Every once in a while I throw her a bone like get dinner take out so she does not have to do the dishes. If I had children I would either have them help my wife or send them to boarding school. Bottom line, idle hands are the devils play things. Just so long as everybody has something to do, they do not have time to complain.

Good luck on tuning things up. A sturdy peice of lumber can sometimes help, until you have things running smoothly.

A couple of questions about Field of Glory. Will it be playable by PBEM? Being a PC version of a table top game, I assume that there will be no fog of war? Any animations for the units, or other things like arrows in flight? I know Matrix has a couple of games, Tin Soldiers, Alexander, and Caesar that are digital miniatures table top games. This one sounds similar. Thanks, I look forward to the details of your new offering.

If this is going to be a PC game of the wargame, I'd prefer to see the bases of the units, or at the very least the outline of the battle groups should be well defined.

I'm looking forward to seeing what this will look like. I'm more interested in the later periods such as medieval. :D

It is not going to be a direct conversion, so FoW is possible iof we want it. It is based on the tabletop rules so you have melee, impact etc and the same tatcis will work but the way you move units around will be different. Combat calculations will take the same type of factors in to account but not be directly related to teh tabletop calcualtions. There will be PBEM. This is a computer game and we'll be using the computer to do what it does best and not tying ourselves in knots to directly repeat what happens on the tabletop. The same type of tactics will work so FoG players will feel at home very quickly. The first priority is to make a good game :)

I for one would be disappointed if the PC version did not recreate the tabletop rules exactly.
The only reason I would buy this would be as a virtual tabletop; a rules tutorial & means of FoG gaming whilst unable to game with real lead.
It would give me the opportunity to try different armies, strategies, different periods, etc. before commiting to a lead investment/ painting the lead mountain.
Would be ideal if travelling, away on business or otherwise unable to get to the wargames club.
Otherwise, I might as well go and play Rome: Total War....

Cheers!

More important question is, will it run under WINE (or if at least Cedega)?

Will PC Fog include a campaign game similar to those in the Total War series or will it only allow individual battles to be fought for the nationalities provided?

Anytime reality gets in the way of fun, fun wins.
Think that's important to keep in mind. An exact copy of the tabletop rules, but not being playable and fun, would not be a good thing I think. Still I've faith that Slitherine will be able to find a good middle ground. I also look forward to see or the armies will retain the feel of the tabletop game. As long as that is the case, its still a great way to judge or you like the army and or its worth investing the time and energy into painting it.

Then again I've it easy, since I don't play the tabletop game. Glad they are making this pc version now though since I've been very intreuged by the FOG rules.

I would be interested in providing the exact same rules as the tabletop FoG game.

which means, the best would be to try and make those rules implemented into game via scripts (ie easily to be moded/added).

I'm signing up for betatest too, iain, please.
