216 BC World Cup Entries
In the hope of a purer sporting contest than the approaching FIFA World Cup in Qatar I offer a tournament with rules inspired by the World Cup’s format. The tournament will use armies from the year 216 BC.
The tournament size will depend on the number of signups. Ideally it will have 16 entrants split into groups of 4 who play each other in a round robin to qualify for playoffs, but it could have some groups of 3 if necessary to accommodate any number of participants (the 1930 World Cup had 13 entrants, and the 2026 World Cup will have 16 groups of 3).
The group stage will consist of a round robin within each group. Generals will score three points for a win and one for a draw. A battle will count as won for this tournament if it is won in FoG2 by 25% points or more, otherwise it will count as a draw. Generals will be ranked within groups by points, then your cumulative opponents’ losses will be used as tie breakers. If generals are still tied, they will be ranked by random lot.
Qualification for the playoffs will depend upon the number of entrants. As an example, if there are 16 teams the Generals that finish first and second in their groups will advance to the Quarter finals, where first placed generals will be drawn randomly against the second-place generals. For other numbers of entrants there might be a round of 16 before, or there could be byes for the top qualifiers.
These battles will be won by normal FoG2 rules (ie margin of 25 percentage points and at least 40% opponent losses, or opponent losses greater than or equal to 60%). In the event of an undecided game the winner will be the general who has suffered less losses, or in a true draw (neither or both armies broken and losses are equal) it will be determined by the flip of a coin.
Qualifiers for further playoff rounds will be drawn randomly against each other. The last stage will the Final and there will be a 3rd/4th place playoff.
I will also set up a Plate competition for generals who do not qualify for the playoffs so as many people as possible get four games.
Each player will command an army from 216 BC. Allies are not allowed. Each army will be used by a single general and a general will use that army for the entire tournament. I will run a similar army selection method to The Divisional Championship, but instead of using ranking to decide who has first choice of an army the order will be random.
Battles are to be between armies of 1600 FP with random map type. No rerolls for maps. Group stage challenges can be played concurrently and set up by either general. I will allow six weeks for completion of the Group stage and three weeks for each subsequent stage, but stages will begin sooner if all results come in.
If this goes well I'll run further World Cups with armies from other years.
Please indicate below if you would like to sign up. Post a list of three armies in order of preference that you would like to use. I will allow two weeks for sign ups and one further week after entries are closed to set the order to choose armies and finalize choices. As in The Divisional Championship you can change your army choice up to the last moment.

Re: 216 BC World Cup
So do you mean a win by hitting 60% first is a draw? You count it as a win later down in the rules.A battle will count as won for this tournament if it is won in FoG2 by 25% points or more, otherwise it will count as a draw.

Re: 216 BC World Cup
In the group stage it's counted as a draw scoring 1 point, but your opponent's losses count towards tiebreaker scoring. In the playoffs hitting 60% first is a win.
It's possible I'm going to wind up some people trying to merge football and FoG2 rules.

Here's the Google sheet I've made for results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
As part of this league I'd like the table to be visible to all. I would also love it if the finalists would be willing to share progress of the final battle through screenshots

According to the original post...
That was dated Sept. 8, so that means you'd need to sign up by the 22nd and finalize your army picks by the 29th.I will allow two weeks for sign ups and one further week after entries are closed to set the order to choose armies and finalize choices.

Ok, thanks. I don't know if we have filled the spaces, but it would be nice to spread it a bit so that more people join.Karvon wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 7:30 amAccording to the original post...
