A draw between Ironclad (Lombards 493-567 AD with Avar allies) v phlewis (Roman 197-284 AD with Armenian allies) 50-26

The Romans opted for an ultra-defensive set-up with the legions and cats holding a line deployed from the Roman edge of the field up to woods backed by engines, other cavalry and infantry amongst extensive marshlands. As expected this proved a formidable task for a mainly cavalry Lombard army which took some time to close, engaging first with lights and then with their main cavalry force front and rear, constricted by the legions and terrain. Unexpectedly they came very close to victory but the draw was always more likely in a hard fought fight.

Div C

Morat (Frankish) beats (technically) Swuul (Romans) 62-59

Amazing battle that ebbed and flowed. Romans won the battle of the lights and the Franks retired to the low heights, drawing the legions on: and using the sub-Roman foot to anchor their right against massed Roman horse. As the infantry battle started, the Franks pushed their concealed horse into the centre in an attempt to break though.

What followed was chaos. A series of individual battles across the field, with any semblance of a front line entirely lost. At the close of the battle, the Franks had at least two units about to break and run: and a draw would have been an entirely justified result. On another day Swuul would have won.

Many thanks to Swuul, who fought a quite magnificent battle.
