Revolting peasants - team event 2022 - Rounds Five and Six

Post by ahuyton »

Our event this time around has been a long one and risks losing momentum, especially with rival competitions so I propose to bring it a close with this final round.

There were some strong reservations about the scenario that I selected so I think we can drop it and instead move forward directly to the late 17th century Hungarian/Austrian clash, which I am sure you will find of great interest. This arrangement also suits me as I will not have time to do a sixth round, so my apologies for that.

As always, large armies, wide agricultural terrain, open battle (this seems to give the most playable game in P&S). The armies are:

Hungarian Kuruc Rebellion 1672 v Imperial Austrian 1675 (from Le Roi Soleil)

Match-ups
Kiwiwarlord v GentlemanRanker (d)
ratprince v Gort7078
gdod v PeterthePainter (w)
warrior230 v Snugglebunnies (w)
smjohnso77 v snooky51 (w)
Markleslie v doyley50 (l)
Lascar v Awesum4 (w)

Let's try to wrap up by mid-June please.

As always play to win but most of all to have fun.

We the Forces of the Empire suffered 14% loses against Lascar's rebels who lost 50%

A large rough hill forward of our left was hotly contested with haiduks and dragoons on both sides, but we had artillery support to help crack his morale.
The centre and right was a line of our pike and shot again supported by artillery blowing holes in his massed cavalry. Our cavalry stayed in reserve to charge once he was disrupted and to prevent outflanking moves.
the first charge of the game was a single unit flank charging his elite cavalry who broke at impact and our unit hit and broke 3 more units before pursuing off the table. That set the tone for the game really, the luck was all on my side.

Hungarian Kuruc Rebellion(markleslie) losses 29% defeats Imperial Austrian (doyley50) 55%.

A large forest behind the Austrian center and a large hill on the Hungarian left were the significant features of the battlefield, but in the end played little part in proceedings.

The Austrians deployed with foot in the center flanked on either side by what mounted they had. The Hungarians were in two wings; the left wing had mounted to the left of the Haiduks, the right wing had ... lots of mounted! Lastly, all the superior mounted including the lancers were located towards the center rear of the Hungarian line ready to exploit opportunity.

A significant proportion of Hungarian losses were on our left wing; our mounted were quickly routed, the Haiduks flanking them suffered greatly in exchanging fire with the Austrian foot but held til the end.
Fortunately for the Hungarian dreams of liberty the right wing, along with the commitment of the superior mounted reserve, smashed the Austrian left flank mounted then turned on their center foot, mobbing them from multiple directions and riding down all opposition collecting a great many guns.

Hurrah!

SnuggleBunnies (Glorious Hapsburg Empire) defeats warrior230 (Obviously Uncivilized Hungarians) 46-10

Pretty tough to beat an army with plentiful Late Pike & Shot with cavalry I think, but warrior came close to breaching the center of my line before his men broke and fled.

Glory to the empire, the Hungarian rabble was routed from the field 44%-10% before, what I imagine was every hussar in Hungary, could make use of their numbers.

Congratulations to snugglebunnies on a very well played game! Dispite the result, it was very enjoyable....which of course is the main thing. Lessons learned going forward.
And many thanks again to Alan of course, for organising yet another splended and enjoyable event. Your efforts are indeed very much appreciated, and I'm sure, have given all of the participating players a great deal of enjoyment and fun!

In a close match between GDod and PeterThe Painter, the rebels under GDod have failed to break the Imperial lines. While we tried our best by repeatedly attacking their well defended line the Imperial firepower was just too much. I'm sad to report the rebellion has failed in this sector.

For the record Imperial Austrians (55% routed) defeated Kuruc Rebels (63% routed). A very well played game from Gavin. We started late, due to my holiday, so it was clear the Austrians had done well in the other battles before we commenced. That was not the case here and despite this being a battle with rough numerical, equality unlike the earlier rounds, I was under severe pressure as Gavin's waves of light horse swarmed against my left flank. Eventually my right flank managed to sweep away the much less numerous rebel left wing and come to aid of my left (although by the time they arrived my left wing was just a few feathers rather than a wing). In my opinion an excellent performance from Gavin, it is much easier to play the infantry heavy army in this time period.

Thanks to Ahuyton for organising the whole event which has been most enjoyable.

So we are drawing to a close, just awaiting the result from Ratprince and Gort. I am glad that people have enjoyed it and got into the spirit of the Peasants' Revolt, even to the extent of the massacre of the peasants at pretty much every stage despite some isolated victories.
