Re: WTC 24 (SWISS) ROUND 5 MATCH RESULTS ( OPEN)
Match 4
Round 5
Period 4
Captain Savage defeats gfs26 44:13
The Portuguese knights managed to smash up the leading elements of the Crusaders knightly charge and in the chaotic mess that developed in the right flank the Portuguese manged to break some spearmen as well.
In the centre Portuguese foot spearmen and crossbows took charge of a small hill covered in a few bits of rough and a small wood. The crusaders sent their spearmen and the terrifying Varangians against them supported by a host of archers and crossbows. The Portuguese were shot a lot but managed to hold it together just as the foot melee began. On the left flank the Portuguese light troops roamed free on a very steep hill and used it as a safe location to start peppering the crusaders right flank. A very tight series of battles took place which the Portuguese had the best of and managed to creep around the Crusaders right flank. The Portuguese light cav managed to confuse the situation and played merry hell in the rear of the enemy - managing to eliminate the only light troops the crusaders had brought along.
The crusaders fought well (it took 4 units to take down the Varangians), but the slightly better manoeuvrability and cheaper troops meant that The Portuguese had more opportunities to get at flanks. I also had a large dose of luck at the right times. Most of all - I guessed the Crusaders plan and set up accordingly. It was very scary facing off against Varangians and Elite knights in large numbers. I was lucky to survive.

Match 5
Period 3
Alexhstandish (Boudicca's Bastards) (Axumite) beat Galou (Northern Guardians) (Palmyrans) 45:15
The battlefield was compressed between some mountains so both sides faced off in between, in open terrain. The Palmyrans put out a host of LI bow with their massed bow behind, sandwiched between the cataphracts. The Axumites advanced with medium foot shielded by their LI bow with camels and elephant behind.
The LI forces clashed to generally even results, the lancers advanced and were met by the Axumite veteran infantry who held their ground. The camels then added their stink, and together these pushed back the lancers, allowing the remaining Axumite foot to get into the massed bow.
Thanks for the game Galou.

Match 4
Round 5
Period 2
Morat (Charming Champians) beats KidneyMagno (Condottieri Italia 1) 50-5
Terrain favoured the Carthaginians from the start - occupying a series of low hills which the Romans had to fight up.
After a brief set of exchanges between the lights, the infantry got to work. Carthaginian heavy spears managed to hold the legions on the left, while the mediums got the upper hand on the right (veteran Samnite's to the fore). Superior Carthaginian mobility found some flanks, and the RNG gods favoured them heavily - Carthaginian wins led to fragmentations, Roman push backs led to their forces getting flanked.
Thanks to KidneyMagno for the match.

Match 1
Period 1
zmd beats kiwiwarlord 40-2
Sea people stand no chance against heavy charoits in the open,so kiwiwarlord move his army into rough ground which on the right side of map. However, he split his army into two groups and put the stronger one on the high ground in the bottom line.I count out he hide 146 forces in marsh between two parts,i don't know what are they and what they are going to do(maybe some javliens and irregulars to flank ?),i never let my troops close that marsh and they never show their faces. But still,it's not a good idea to split two forces so far away.
Consider that rough ground enemy's missile is far less than mine,i begin my shooting.Under the guard of heavy charoits, those sea people could not move forward but taking arrows.Once fragment,i use skirmisher to charge, lead more enemy fragment. One of my slinger even charge down three squads,i will reward them as royal Hittite slinger!
About the high ground enemys, they never move......just watch their comrade die......not a single move.I once worried they will move down from hill to give me a flank threat,so i left some heavy charoits maintaining a line to watch in the open, maybe that's the reason?I don't know. So,from begin to the end,i only contact lesser than half of Kiwiwarlord's army, and once a chosen sherden retreat, fragment and was charged down,it's 40 grades.
Thanks for this last game of WTC 2024!

Re: WTC 24 (SWISS) ROUND 5 MATCH RESULTS ( OPEN)
Match 1
Period 2
Herd of Kiwi vs Zhu Que
oscarius (Spartan) beats w2512494748 (Roman): 57 to 32
Both sides deployed a fairly similar composition of pikes, legionaries, thureophoroi and triarii. The only minor difference being that the Spartan pikes were to a higher standard than the average and raw Greek ones while the Romans had a slightly stronger skirmishing arm via their velites.
Map was mixed rough and open ground with a wide hill in the centre.
My opponent deployed in a deep column formation presumably with the intent to secure the favourable hills in the middle of the map (but luckily closer to my line). This had me nervous as my deployment was wide (with my weakest troops, the thureophoroi on the hills and my pikes and Romans on the flat). It would take me time to re-position my army.
The Roman advance on the hill was fatally blunted with the over-enthusiastic advance of the scutari whose pursuit of my own skirmishers left them stranded to be encircled by my reserves. Ultimately my opponents assault was too piecemeal and slow, allowing me to get an early lead in destroying some of his over-aggressive units but landing his army too dangerously close to safely disengage.
Height advantage and luck allowed my units on the hill to survive long enough for my strong pikes to come into play (a crucial early fight was my CnC holding a pike unit against multiple veteran hastarii despite the massive casualties). I do think my opponents velites did not prove very useful for him (perhaps given the price he felt reluctant to risk them). If he had committed them to his early attack on the hill instead of pulling them back at the last minute he could have bought some crucial time to seize the hill. In the end more thureophoroi would have undoubtedly been more useful.
This was a good, aggressive game with both sides eager to meet.
Well-played and can't wait to do it all again next year! Thanks to everyone I played, the level of sportsmanship was fantastic as always (very heart-warming was receiving a PM from a beginning player I beat in the first round who took on my feedback and won his next four matches!). Over the moon to have made it this far in the tournament after my disastrous performance last year (going from 120th to beating the guy who came 2nd last year is quite the feeling). Props to my New Zealander team mates who were great conversation and support. And finally a big thank you to Eric, Angus and Mike (and anyone else I've forgotten) for setting this whole thing up. Tournaments like these keep Field of Glory alive and strong

Match 1
Period 3
TaBai - Indo-Greek beats GDod - Arab (City) 59-21
The battlefield was almost open with two highland on both sides, and a impassable river on my left.
Indo-Greek troops composition of elephants, cavalries, pikes, close fighters and massed archers, deployed in a deep column formation.Arab armies’ deployment was more wide with a large number of footmen, supported by cavalries and light units.
My formation moved to the left front, relying on the river to protect the left wing from being surrounded, and made use of the narrow battlefield width to offset the Arab's numerical advantage.
One of my over-aggressive pikes and some close fighters were defeated. Fortunately, the elephants successfully defended my opponent’s infantries and limited his cavalries without much loss.Terrain advantage allowed Indo-Greek units on the left highland held the line long enough until right flank destroyed Arab left wing.
A tough battle, and it wasn’t easy to win. Thanks for the good game!

Match 7
Period 2
SgtOgre (Parthian w/Seleucid Allies) defeated Enry1977 (Roman w/Pergamene Allies) 48-21
A bit of early maneuvering that allowed the Romans to anchor a flank on some woods, while boldly advancing his cavalry from his left flank to his right across the front of the infantry before I could reach him. The Parthian LC ran around doing their pesky shooting and taking out Roman lights while the foot maneuvered into a line to face off. It was a tough scrum in the middle until I got a some pike to break the elephant and free up my cats and foot to hit some flanks before his wedge cavalry came into my own flank. The Roman foot started breaking before the wedges could take advantage and the game ended in a Parthian victory, but it was closer than the score.
A good and tough fight.
