15mm Mongol Figures

Post by imanfasil »

I am starting to feel the need to have a painted Mongol army for FoG. I was thinking about Ilkhanids. Anyone have any figure suggestions?

I've just started such an army with Legio Heroica miniatures.
The mongols are really nice but with some extra job to glue lances and shields.
As they also have a crusade range, we could also get the knights and the kurds with the same gravure.

Otherwise Touller steppes miniatures with Essex knights and muslims should be nice too.

Thanks Nik... I had never seen that page before and I can tell I am going to spend days looking at it for all my armies.

For my first Mongol army was Alain Touller figures link below. The figures are really nice with some mix and match options with other steppe figures (including dismounted) but are a true 15mm and I think quite small by others makers.

As I have since used Legio Heroica for my crusader army which are very nice but as lot bigger compared to Alain. Now that Legio have released their Mongol range I am replacing my Alain Touller Mongols with with Legio. I am using some Turcomen from his Arab range to add some variety to the Legio Mongols I also hope he expands his Mongol range in 2011.

It was better to leave disputing about the faith to the theologians and just run argumentative non-believers through with the sword (Louis IX).

Mongols

I'm dusting off the Mongol army I started 25 years ago, so I've been picking up some new models to replace much of my older stuff. I agree that the best place to start is with Legio Heroica's Mongols and Muslims - they paint up very nice. I like the fact that they are cast without weapons, as I armed most of the Ghilman I recently painted with bows and swords rather than lances. Several of the Museum Mongol and Seljuk castings are very nice, too, but many of them aren't that great, so you just have to sort through them. As always, you can mix in some Essex figures. They have quite a variety and they are very easy to modify (weapons & poses) which gives you even more variety. All three of these are very size compatible.

Khurasan makes some excellent figures, but many of them are being recast so may not be available at this time. The Old Glory Mongols look nice on their website, but I haven't personally seen them, so can't comment on size. I have quite a few of the older models (TableTop, Irregular, Minifig, etc.), and even though some of them aren't that bad, I would not use any of them if I was starting from scratch simply because they're so small and lack much of the detail you get in the newer castings. Good luck!
