AI purchase logic

Post by pstamatis »

I noticed that in Axis defencive scenarios, the AI purchases and places particular types of tanks on all free hexes of a city-edge inside the AI controlled territory (shermans in DDay, Cromwells in the city of Vasto in Italy 44, SU100s in Budapest etc).
From a realism perspective, is it better to have the AI purchase units with more variety rather than exploiting particular units? Or at least, distribute the units to different cities?

(Irrelevant but I still remember my agony to kill enough Cromwells and make a unit reach Vasto for several moves as the AI generated new Cromwells on every free hex per turn).

This is the same program as in PG.
It is plain dumb. It automatically buys units and places them around all city hexes. When complete it goes on to the next city. Then it repeats again unitl all cities are surrounded with units. Then and only then will it make any attempt in attacking you.

It would be better if they placed one or two units less around a city.

That aspect would be easy to change and help alittle, but still doesn't fix the problem of a dumb AI.

If you've figured out the AI to the point of utter predictability, there's always multiplayer to test your mettle! :)

I think once the first version is out we can do another pass on the AI but I think it plays a reasonable game.

Yes it does, concerning the tactical AI. The purchase logic although seems static (and fully predictable if you replay the scenario), especially the pattern ("buy as many as best tanks you can get") In my opinion, some randomness is definitely needed here.
