Best multiplayer scenario for a newbie

Post by johntindall »

Hi everyone, particularly our senior players.

I'm new to the game and am loving it. I was wondering if Pip, Iain and our experienced players would care to give their thoughts on best MP scenarios for newbies like me to go up the learning curve?

Try Desert Fort. It's small enough and gives u practice with both infantry & tank tactics plus u get arty help.

The only problem with Desert Fort is that, if you play as the German, and unless you play with extremely good tactics,..and some luck,..the Germans will never win.
Obviously the British also would have to play fairly well. It took me 50 tries (read as defeats) to win as the Germans.
However,...this is a Great Challenge in itself to learn as a newbie.

The one I would also suggest is Christmas Surprise.
This one is also difficult to win,...but this time it's the Allies that have a tough time winning.
The Germans get overwhelming support turn after turn.
It can seem impossible to win as Allies,.....However,...it is possible with the right tactics to stop the Germans in their tracks.

What I would suggest as a newbie is to pick one particular map,...and play it over and over and over again.
Play both sides ad nauseum,....
This will help you see what tactics people use to win. Then just repeat what they do.
Sounds easy,..it is not.
Good luck!

Hmm, we had different experiences with Desert Fort because I played this map back-to-back in 2 games with same friend and we used both Allies & Axis in each and I won both without difficulty for the Germans...

I suggested this map because the map is fairly symmetrical, game goes by quickly enough to learn and put to use, and there's plenty of elements BA designed it for (line of sight, ambush points, artillery use, elevated areas, etc....)

In fact, for the newbie question above, try playing 2 MP maps at the same time and try and one as each faction and you'll learn the mechanics that way too... HF/GL.

Good points, and I agree!
Perhaps you and I need to play Desert Fort

and the Brits were Victorious!
Game started off well for Germans,..but the Brits took out the PZIV pretty quickly.
The Brits knocked out most of the transports and killed some infantry.
The Germans ended up surrendering once it was known that a win was impossible without infantry to capture further flags.

haha, yep pretty much covers it. Boy some of these maps are so grossly unbalanced. (after we played this gortwillsaveus, I recalled now that my friend accidentally artillery-ed himself and took out 1/4 of his U.S. team).

I thought your attack was great! You had me worried the first few turns.
I also thought that the Germans could never win at Desert Fort.
But I must have played it 50 times before I tried something that seems to work 8 out of 10 times.
Would you like to play again,..this time,..I'll be the Germans?
If so,..set the game up and send me a password again.

If the constant playing shows up any imbalances on a specific map, then definitely open a Tech Support thread on it, with details of your "win tactics" and we can take a look. Sometimes it takes a while for balance issues to be discovered!

Cheers

Desert Fort is one of my favorite scenarios to play.
Although the Germans have a tough fight,...they can win! With the right tactics.
Personally,..I'd hate for this original scenario (as well as any others) to modified in any way.
However,...just as GottaLove88s created a modified scenario,....the original remains to be played.
It feels great, beating something that appears un-winnable.

Hi guys - did you play this and did gort's 8/10 solution work?

While I offered up a challenge to play as Germans in Desert Fort,..the challenge was not accepted. :(
ryukikass offered an entirely different scenario challenge,...which I accepted.

GWSU, I'd be honored (and very, very anxious). I should warn you, I'm losing four out of five games, so this might be a waste of your valuable time. Nevertheless, I appreciate the offer and would be grateful for any coaching along the way.

I'll send an invite via PM.

Don't worry,...I lose my fair share of games still,...usually when I get cocky or lazy.
I'll pick that game up later.
Thanks!
