Capturing forts?

Post by LandMarine47 »

Could this be a new mechanic in Soviet Corps, of taking enemy strongpoints and forts from them? The way is see it

They must be at 5 steps or less

Must be heavily suppressed

2 or 3 units must be nearby to capture it.

I think this would even out the odds a bit! I've always wanted to take enemy forts from them! (Sevestapol Assault )

Would be interesting, maybe the flamethrower troops could increase the likelihood of taking over a fortification, and you'd be able to place any unit into the fortification for different bonuses (i.e. Hvy infantry in the forts would be stonger against hard targets, normal infantry, better against soft target. Maybe static ATs could integrate with the fortifications to make a fortified AT position)

One problem would be that some guns, fortifications, etc. are facing in a particular direction. Also the fort would be damaged somewhat in being captured. So, ideally, a captured fort should have reduced effectiveness.

It can be scripted that any particular unit switches sides like the strongpoints and forts you mention.

For game play purposes I can think of two solutions. First, you capture the fort or strong point and becomes one of your units. Second, you destroy the fort but the ruins then act like fortifications. The first would probably better suit specific missions, where capturing the for would allow you to turn the guns to your advantage (much like Grande Fort Phillipe in Dunkirk) while the second could make sense in more general play.

For the second, I suspect you'd have the same issues that people have with bridges being destroyed and converting to normal river hexes. I haven't yet got into designing scenarios so can't comment on how hard this is.

It isn't too hard to do something like blowing a bridge in the editor, you just need enough zones for the scenario still to work.
Then all you do is add a hex action that changes where the roads are on the map.
