Balance of Official MP Scenarios
Hello All:
Curious about the results of Official MP Scenarios. Seems that the PBEM Server would have this data easily. Is this something that is available to use.
Wondering about all scenarios but at the moment I am wondering how many have won Bagration Village Fight as the Germans?
Thanks,
Gerry

Hello Gerry,
I can say with personal experience that the Germans can win the village fight scenario - in fact my opinion is they may have the easier battle, as their tanks are more accurate at range and they have flamethrower tanks to clear the village. I played twice as the Soviets against the Germans and suffered a humiliating defeat and a more closely contested defeat.

I did as the Germans.
Re: Balance of Official MP Scenarios
Thanks Joe and Galangalad.
I thought as much. I will have to improve at combined arms big time. A few things:
1. Is there something in the Squads file that would help me figure out how close the Soviet tanks have to be to negate the advantage the German tanks have at a distance?
2. Does the Slitherine server track data about scenario win-loss records?
Thanks,
Gerry

So that is why I'm taking a beating in a skirmish game. Russian tanks can't as effectively stand off and slug it out. Lesson learned. A Jadgpanther is eating my lunch.

If I recall in the early T-34 model 1941 that unit the commander fired the main gun and it had only a 4 man crew, AND it did not have good sights for ranged firing.
I guess they hoped to make it up with numbers.

And no radios. German armor had superior command and control for most of the War over the Russians.jcb989 wrote:If I recall in the early T-34 model 1941 that unit the commander fired the main gun and it had only a 4 man crew, AND it did not have good sights for ranged firing.

Re: Balance of Official MP Scenarios
I know the Russians closed with the Germans to negate the distance disadvantage. Any one know how many tiles this would be in BA2? Or how could I figure it out from the data?
Thanks,
Gerry

Re: Balance of Official MP Scenarios
Every time. German armour has an overwhelming advantage in this scenario and a definite advantage in late-war scenarios generally. I've tried Village Fight many times as Russians and have not cracked it yet. In skirmish mode, I would like to give the German player fewer points but the forces are locked by the game.Gerry wrote:Hello All:

SPOILER ALERT *******************************
I have lost as the Germans and won as the Russians, hence my question.
A major problem I had as the Germans is there is really only one hex into the Village over the bridge for the tanks as you cannot cross the 2 fords.
But I was probably approaching the scenario in the wrong way. Do you leave the tanks outside and support the infantry going in over the bridge and ford?
I know I didn't use smoke properly.

Re: Balance of Official MP Scenarios
Lay down smoke and proceed with caution. Definitely some support armour on the other side of the stream helps but a sizable force of panzers should attack inside the village. Bring the flame panzer in when you have the edge of the village controlled. I'm no expert, but a careful German advance into the village should win the day most of the time. Note panzers have smoke canisters (Russians do not), which is a big plus if you run into trouble. A mortar barrage on the bridge wire should allow an advance force of infantry on halftracks into the village quickly. I believe Germans get to move first, which is another boon for the German side.

Re: Balance of Official MP Scenarios
As the Russians, try to outflank with all your movement points and stop right at the rear of the German tank. Shot it from behind or from the flank. If you can't reach them within your turn, use hunt to use your maximum mp allowance and shoot.
Re: Balance of Official MP Scenarios
Hello All,
Yes, it was Galangalad who won again me on one and Iain on the other. With Galangalad and my battle, his tanks took up position on one bank of the village and mine on the other, and he wiped mine out. My infantry had more luck in the village itself, but they were outnumbered by then, so it was more delaying the inevitable. I won't mention my battle with Iain.
I'm not sure exactly which aspect of the squads file is used, but I've looked into the MASTER_SQUADS.xls file and I think it is the AP accuracy, as the Soviet tanks here seem to have a lower accuracy that the German tanks. but basically Soviet tanks vs German tanks involves closing the gap ASAP and shooting as close as possible. The German tanks can generally do the opposite - keep their distance and use their greater accuracy for best effect. With this map, we have had a bit of a chat, and looking at the Soviet forces you can get we think we have a good (but untested) strategy:
Each team seems to have easy access to 3 VPs, with the centre one in the village being the contested one and therefore the critical one to fight for. You want to get a tank (probably your flamethrower tank) through the barbed wire and into the village ASAP. Then you want to get the halftracks and your infantry into the village and set up well (e.g. HMGs in the bunkers, good line of sight for any units, infantry suitably placed to use AT charges when tanks are near). Your tanks will not want to try fighting their tanks, as the only way to get close is to go through the village and while you try this they will be firing at you, so we'd say probably hold them back until your infantry need the support (hopefully by this point there are fewer German tanks).
Regarding win/loss data, the server doesn't yet track this.

Thanks for the tips. Yes that fourth VP is critical. Soviets need to get that early.
