Teleporting Army

I had an army in enemy territory, when peace broke out. None of the neighboring provinces had room, so my troops went to the Deploy Pool. The leader disappeared, but I was offered a new(same?) hero the turn after deploying. The main point is I was able to move that army 15 provinces to a different boarder and set up shop. Wondering if taking over the least populated / closest province and then moving the current occupants of that province to the Deploy tool would be a better option?

Might be nice to have a name or different color with the heroes cards so we could tell them apart.
