Charging troops who may evade

Post by AlexandersChiefEunuch »

On p.57 of the v.2 rule book it lists as a restriction on the rule that a charge may begin with a single wheel of up to 90 degrees:

"If charging enemy who could evade, the charging battle group cannot wheel beyond the position at which the enemy would be contacted
if they did not evade. Exception: If all targets evade, the charging battle group can wheel one front corner up to 1 MU at the start of its charge
move even if this is further than the above rule would permit."

Does this mean that when declaring a charge against troops who could evade, the charge cannot be declared at an angle requiring an initial wheel beyond that which would be necessary to contact the enemy if they didn't evade, as is often done to give the evaders the dilemma of evading directly to their rear or directly away from the charge ? As the direction of charge is a function of the initial wheel proposed for the charge by the declaring player, and the direction of charge has to be indicated before his opponent declares his charge response, then the distance of the initial wheel must be set before the enemy opts to evade. So this paragraph seems to suggest to me that the declared direction of charge shouldn't involve a wheel greater than that necessary to contact the enemy battle group if it were not to evade.

I should be most grateful for a masterclass on this rule if any one feels game .

Cheers

Hi Martyn - rather unhelpfully it means what it says and I think your understanding is correct. So if my chargers need to do an wheel of say 45 degrees to hit your BG - then that is the maximum permitted wheel. I cannot try and wheel by more than this to hit a different target. This is often overlooked.

In V1 an official FAQ was issued which basically said that a wheel cannot continue past the point of initial contact if no evade occurred. This led to people pushing LH right up to HF for example in the certain knowledge they could not be caught in the evade whilst also restricting the HF's angle of charge.

V2 introduced the 1 MU wheel in an attempt to help alleviate this.

Hope that makes sense.
