After reading topic about morale in computers games, nazy and Czech Republic Great Country (making Czech Pz 38(t), Hetzer and so for Hitler), I just wanna ask a simple question: "What kind of war movies do you like to seen ?"

My favourites:

- TV serial "Czterej pancerni i pies" (Polish)
- TV serial "Liberation" (USSR)

Five I like (in no particular order): Cross of Iron, Kellys Heroes, Longest Day, Tora Tora Tora and Casablanca. Catch 22 would be the 6th in my top five.

Flammen & Citronen (Dk 2008) - a great and very ambivalent movie about the Danish resistance movement; just being on the right side doesn´t make you a hero or does it ? It´s starring Mads Mikkelsen, so what can possibly go wrong ? Also, this allows the movie to be watched with your wife.

I can recommend the 1969 Yugoslavian movie "Battle of Neretva " - it is an exciting action war movie in an unusual setting. Also, it surprisingly casts the best actors of the era from all over the world: Orson Welles, Yul Brunner, Curd Jürgens, France Nero, Sergei Bondarchuk.

Both great films, but not 'fun' watching as they are both too good at what they do (portraying the horror of war) to be something I fancy watching on a regular basis.

I have a soft spot for 'Sink the Biskmark', 'the guns of Navorone' and other classic 'Sunday afternoon TV' movies.

The episode of Doctor Who with daleks shooting down Stukas during the Battle of Britain was more accurate than U571.
Next from the makers if U571, General Custer and the 7th Cavalry in the Charge of the Light Brigade?
However, U571 wasn't all fiction - there really were submarines in the war.

Favorite is a difficult term, since a WW2 movie is always observed and evaluated with differing terms. For instance - the acting is not that good in Battle of Britain, but I prefer it over any present day fighter/bomber movie, since it did not involve any computer aided scenes and the aircraft were actual aircraft. Same applies to Piece of Cake - not well known series depicting a ficticious Spitfire squadron with wonderful action scenes. Red Tails may have nice footage, but the acting is even worse and I was able to finish watching it with difficulty - CGI showed scenes with aircraft performing unrealistic Hollywood stunts. What were they thinking...
Also - WW2 is a difficult subject - now 75+ years ago, the persons that witnessed it personally are dwindling. So it has to be incorporated in a more attractive context - a romance for instance: Pearl Harbor is a good example. Again - nice graphics, but I dont understand, with so much literature and knowledge available, scenario writers and directors still make non-realistic and non-historical decisions so their audiences are impressed.
Enemy at the gates - wonderful to watch, but compared to historical notes, much critized. The Imitation Game - also a wonderful dramatic account, which does give full credit to the Enigma-code crackers, with again, simplified many historical facts easy to understand chunks for the average cinema spectator. Fury - wonderful footage but what was the director thinking - make an sf-movie instead of a ww2-based one: a Sherman circling a Tiger until it can reach its weak spot? A stranded Sherman attacked by a fully-AT equiped German platoon during the worlds fastest sunset and failing to destroy it?
Der Untergang was a wonderful movie in other aspects: finally a non-english speaking Hitler, which involved seeking a German speaking actor which would be sufficient looking and acting like herr Hitler himself would (and would want to tackle such a non-popular historical figure) - well done as far as I was able to judge.
I noticed several WW2 movies from Eastern countries that I have not seen - will surely look them up! Another lesser known series worth while is by Russian director Yuri Ozerov, especially Battle of Berlin, with wonderful shots. And Hitler not killing himself, because he did not have the courage, but his aide Linge instead finishing him off - better suited for Russian viewers to have the German commander a coward in the end.

Looking forward to The Mighty Eight - new HBO-series and (like mentioned) Dunkirk...
