Greetings all.
For those who have tried this scenario. Has anyone managed to save one (or both!) of your carriers? It seems to be an impossible task but having just one would be helpful for a Tac bomber base as you push to the south!
Also - what units did you pick up at the beginning to round out your force?

Re: Fjord war
The greatest enemy to success in this battle isn't the British. Nor Soviets. Not even the Americans at the bottom of the map. It's the Germans. Your starting German force is.... how do I put this diplomatically... not very good. lol
I mostly scrap the pre-placed units to reform the army. And once the major battle to cross the Fjord is done, I let all my ships sink. By freeing up those AUX slots, you can use it for more ground and air forces for the crazy hard digging out enemy position combat that this map requires.

Hmmmmm
Well I've almost finished off the Brits and the Soviets and have plenty of time left so I can confidently state losing the carriers isn't too big a deal (other than the planes I lost at the same time
)
Yeah some of the starting forces are just too weak - I wish I'd disbanded those PzIVs. Still have 2 landed in the east. As soon as I take that supply hex I think I'll swap them out for something more useful. Still I'm making some headway with what you start with plus the extra slots you have. My loses have been horrendous though. Even managed to get a Tiger 2 shot up
Actually I wish I'd though of your idea and just disbanded almost everything and built my own core - even the Panthers don't fare to well against those IS2's!
I can see letting my Uboats sink as useful to free up the core slots. The BBs and CA are useful as artillery though. (The CL less so, but then I got it sunk recently so its a moot point). The DDs are only useful to protect my BBs until the last of the subs are gone.
On another note: discovered that the E75 can not load on to sea transports - more time lost there to go along with several other mistakes.
Oh and I think I've finally broken the back of the Allied airforce. But wow do they have a lot of planes

Re: Fjord war
You don't have to disband your starting force, just upgrade it during the deployment phase.
Those lousy Panzer IVJs can at least become Panther Gs.
My strategy was to send everything at the Soviets first.
Overwhelm their navy, grind down the airforce, land with Gebirgsjagers and Pioneers because the terrain there is very mountainous.
Then armor, AT guns and artillery. I pushed slowly but surely.
I then used the navy to duke it out with the British navy and didn't lose that many ships.
Oh yeah, and the airforce... the air war took about 20 turns !!! And that's with me having 11 fighters.
After wiping out the Soviets, I continued my drive south against the Americans.
I bought a token force (2 Pioneers, King Tiger, JagdTiger and a recon) and sent it against the Brits.
It was grinding down the defenses bit by bit. I kept adding to it whenever my ships sunk or planes got shot down.
Eventually it managed to capture the British victory hex.
The main force, in the meantime was pushing through the American defenses in the south.
Lots of infantry, AT guns and artillery are needed here imho.
At this point I started disbanding my fighters. You can do it if you capture the small island in the middle.
2 Falschirmjagers should be able to do it, with some bomber support.
I think the key to this map is getting the good old friend Gustav. Once I captured the Soviet hex, I used the 5000 it provided to buy this beast.
Gustav blasted past forts, entrenched infantry, super heavy tanks etc. It ended up in the 1st place by points at the end of the scenario.
At that point there was no enemy airforce to threaten it.
You can't take Gustav all the way though! Once you reach the southeastern US hex, the railroad ends. You can disband him here and buy him back at the British victory hex.
Took me ~ 40 turns to finish this scenario. I must say, it was quite enjoyable.
