There are always more versions of installations around than a few beta testers can test. My suggestion is to uninstall GS v1.06 and then install GS v2.0. Installing a new version on-top of an old version is riskier than making a clean install.

One typical problem is that some players have created scenario files and placed them in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe at War\Grand Strategy Mod\data\scenario

Folder name may differ slightly dependent upon game version.

When the game starts it will try to compile all scn files present there. The only files that should be there are 1939.scn, 1940.scn, 1941.scn, 1942.scn, 1943.scn, 1944.scn and ww2.map, all with a date of May 2011. If there are any other files you need to delete them.

Someone distributed files like 1939ai.scn etc. with a specific GS v1.0x version and those are NOT compatible with GS v2.0.

So the most likely culprit are scenario files present in the scenario folder. By first uninstalling GS v1.06 you get rid of such scenario files. This is where I would try to look first.

When the team has had a chance to check it out I'm sure they'll work it out.

I have a feeling the main reason for the problems is old scenario files present in the scenario folder. I think installing GS v2.0 ontop of GS v1.06 increases the risk of such problem. If you've modded some other files like the txt files you may also introduce problems because we've made our own mods and the code files anticipate those mod files. Therefore a clean install is always better than installing ontop of an older version.

Most beta testers have managed to get GS v2.0 to work and those with problems have managed to fix the issues by making a clean install.

C'mon guys, no need for foul language. It's a free update after all!

My situation is an GS 2.00 installation over 1.12 Gold version and GS 1.07 on Windows 7. The game is located in D: volume instead of C: volume using the standard path.

File named Error.log created in Grand Strategy Mod-folder after the failed start ups attempts only says: "KERNEL MEMORY CHECKING IS **OFF**". Can I change a "0" to "1" in some file to get it to write something into this file?

Before the crash when the DOS-box dissappears I see somethingWaterHexsomething flashing as the last line. The only *WaterHex* file seems to be located in the game folder. Hmm...

_augustus_ //hmmm maybe it's better try the uninstalling. Not sure I have all that is needed to reinstall the game, tough.

First download failed at 33MBs but a second one sized 233 MB (244 733 669 bytes) / 233 MB (244 736 000 bytes) installed just fine.

Or fine and fine. For for me the game runs the intro screens of green Slitherine logo and beige the soldiers, but disappears into thin air after that. Oh well
Look in the data/scenario folder and make sure you only have 1939.scn, 1940.scn, 1941.scn, 1942.scn, 1943.scn, 1944.scn and ww2.map present there. All files should be from May 2011. All other files should be deleted because those are left over from GS v1.07. Especially make sure you delete files ending with ai in the file name. Those are not compatible since the map has been changed.

The reason for the crash at your stage is that the game wants to compile all scn files in the scenario folder into data files. If it compiles and incompatible file it will crash to desktop.

First try to check the scenario folder and remove the extra files there (look at previous post from me). If that doesn't work you uninstall GS v1.07 and then install GS v2.00. You can keep CeaW v1.12.

It would be nice if anyone who had problems and fixed the problems with uninstalling GS v1.07 post here so we know that this actually helps.

Hi all,

Stauffenberg's advice on the scenario folder seems to help. I removed all the excess files(not that I had tinkered with any of them before) and the game now starts fine and and a game can be started.

Thanks!

_augustus_ //now if I only could it run nicely in the full screen mode without distortion. I only acquired a widescreen monitor just month ago during the wait for the 2.00. I guess there is no way to get the game to run nicely in the full screen mode in a wide screen monitor?

For the solution to your problem see: viewtopic.php?p=228286#228286

The problem was that you installed GSv2.00 over the top of GSv1.07. We should have made it clear that you need to unistall GSv1.07 first. However; if you didn't the above reference explains how to fix your install so that it will run.

Deleting the 19__ai.scn files seems to have done the trick for me.

Thanks for the help and thanks for another great FREE mod.

I still wonder how the ai files were distributed because I never made them and I have the modded editor.

Borger, they were part of GSv1.06. I am the culprit. They were made so that Switzerland was pro-axis to prevent the axis AI for declaring war on them. I think I may have made a country or two (e.g., Ireland) pro-allied. Even though we don't support the AI I caved to outside pressure to make these small changes and scenario inclusion in GSv1.06 to make AI play a bit better and I've regretted it ever since. The issue is that if one doesn't uninstall GSv1.06 before installing GSv2.00 these files don't get overwritten, like the normal scenario files, and remain present in the Grand Strategy Mod\data\scenario folder. Since the *ai.scn files are NOT compatible with GSv2.00 they cause the game to crash on start up. The same would be true for any user customized scenario not bearing the same name of the normal scenarios.

Just wanted to post a big

THANK YOU

to the development team first and foremost but of course also to the beta-testers and Slitherine for making this happen.

Right now I am exploring GS2 vs the AI and hopefully I will soon be playing it via PBEM.

Again, thanks for the excellent work and the big effort you made!

I've got the version 1.12 Gold? from Matrix - On the main menu there is a check for update prompt, I thought I could download it from there, but it keeps advising me that I have the latest version - NOT. I've downloaded several time from slitherine and the patches scroll. Both with windows 7 computer and and adobe - game with not run on either.

Are you grabbing the correct file - the GS 2.0 expansion?

This will work with the Matrix version. We tried it out so it should be ok.

The check for updates button only refer to the main game. This is an expansion, so does not modify the base game so is not included here.

If not can you be specific about what happens so we can look in to it.

Very good, I have a problem with the expansion 2.0, after install it without problems, run the exe and I get an error window with the following message: Could not open file LAUNCHER\OPTIONS.TXT to parse (0).

My OS is Windows 7 64-bit, language is Spanish. Only indicate that I looked inside the folder LAUNCHER and the file does not exist.

Can anyone solve the problem, many thanks in advance.

eveready321 & petescan,

Please answer the following questions.

1. What is your base (i.e., vanilla) version? Is it 1.12 gold or 1.12 Military History version? Or an earlier version (e.g., CEaW 1.00)?

2. If you answered an earlier version have you upgraded it to CEaW 1.12 gold before install GSv2.00?

3. Have you previously installed any version of GS (i.e., v1.00 - v1.06)?

4. Did you buy your version from Slitherine or Matrix?
