I personally feel that Slitherine have made a rod for their own backs and have placed themselves in somewhat of a tricky predicament. If they release the digital version now I strongly suspect that very few copies of it will be purchased. The overwealming number of replies here and elsewhere indicate players want a physical copy, a small number are interested in the digital version. So people are naturally going to wait to see what kind of printable version there is going to be. If they release the digital version and it does not achieve a viable sales target that may well have a direct impact on a printed version, Sliterine just may not be able to afford to put out a printed copy. It may look as being sensible to releasing the digital version along with a version that is either printable or even a printed rule book, but then you have the dilemma of will players bother buying the digital version if there is a printable version?

I am also sure that Sliterine are acutely aware that if they do make a digital version that allows you to print off a copy of the rules they run the risk that some players will club together to buy just one copy of the digital version between them, print off a copy and then distribute copies of that copy to all and sundry.

Its a conunderum and no mistake.

Yes but we don't want fragment things further than they are. If we have some people on V2 and others on V1 we don't think it will be good for anyone.

We want a universal solution that everyone can move to V2 when they want.

A downloadable rule is also good ( please sometimes, trust the players ...)

Yes. Much as I like what I have heard of V2 I don't think there is need to rush. Many of the changes are to do with making lights and other mobile troops a little less mobile. The switch (at least in the UK) in the standard tournament table from 6 x 4 ft to 5 x 3 has gone a long way towards achieving that already.

I do disagree . I know of tournaments ( outside UK ) that are NOT organised this year because of ...waiting for V2 .....so let's wait but if people switch to another rule they will not come back .

I already have some problems organising IWC2013 because people want to know what version of the rules .

Like every rule there is the "fatigue" fact to take into account.
People get tired of them...so it is cruial that the V2 gets out, otherwise people will find alternatives and not comeback to FOGam.

Experience will vary from person to person. FWIW Fog AM remains popular at my club, perhaps in part because we now normally run 650 pt (15 mm) armies on 3 foot x 4 foot tables. As well as refreshing the game that diminishes many of the problems associated with v 1: too much skirmishing, too few HF, Benny Hill.

Those who have drifted away are mostly playing Fog R. Which is understandable, as those rules benefitted from the experience gained with Fog AM. No doubt most will return when Fog AM 2 emerges, benefiting as it will do from experience gained with both sets.

I look forward to the new edition. However, Slitherine are surely right in saying that if the digital version is released ahead of the printed/ printable edit it will split the community. Leading players have declared on these boards their reluctance to shift from v 1 unless and until a print version becomes available. Tournament organisers won't know which version to run. And if the enthusiasts - who participate here or play in tournaments - are split, casual players will be even more so.

I guess all of us would like to see v 2 released as soon as is practicable, but I think it is worth waiting for it to be done well.

Apparently you have not looked at the demographics of the future*. Not to worry. Many people, such as educational planners, are continually surprised by the fact that in one year's time everyone will be one year older. :D

* If you plan to retire in the next 20-25 years all the people who you need as workers to support your retirement have already been born. The detailed calculations are left to the reader. :D :D

Before I start to whine again ... Just exactly what is a printable version of V2 going to be? Will it be something similar to the playtest rules that we used after downloading and printing or some sort of print on demad thing where we order it and it comes by mail, printed and bound (in color)? Is a printed and bound book-like thing even an option??

Now on to whining ... Had a couple of gamers stop by the hobby shop during our last game (FoG-R). They wondered why we were still playing FoG. They weren't aware anybody else was. They mentioned no articles or info in Wargames Illustrated anymore, no games at the local convention and no copies of the rules to be found anywhere. Neither of them were interested in an I-Pad version and they don't post here .... I did notice that the 300th edition of Wargames Illustrated had one scenario using FoG, Agincourt. I have been thinking about writing a FoG article for WI, one of those "here's how I modeled then played the game" a battle article. Madaxeman should really think about doing something for them. His work is outstanding and might help spure some interest back into the game. Hail Caesar and Black Powder are all over WI articles. I wonder if the Slitherene folks are really working for Warlord Games in secret. :)

I agree the marketing effort for FOG has not lived up to the look.

PS we think the Print on demand is the fancy kind that comes in bound form of some kind.

Hi guys,

we're trying to do this in the best way possible which is time consuming and expensive. After a lot of work we are happy to confirm that the print on demand version of Field of Glory Ancients & Medieval 2.0 will be a full colour hardback edition.

We're hoping this is acceptable! :)

Cheers

I think you have a comma missing, after "possible".
