Re: Help wanted on how to use cavalry

more dangerous in the second half of a battle where formations might be starting to break up and there are isolated and damaged targets available to attack Yes to this. It is as the battle develops and the cracks start to appear that cavalry can become the ancient panzers. Flanks are ideal but thos...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

(Cunningcairn, Alex at Gaugamela=>) AfaIk, his (few) light infantry were used against the chariots (only). There was way too much Persian cavalry to frustrate it with lights, even in FoG2.

(Lights are very dark green, chariots white, scythed chariots gray.)

Re: Help wanted on how to use cavalry

Mod sounds interesting. It´s a rather fundamental rebalancing, though, while what I had in mind were more like a few incremental changes. :)

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

The simple truth is that if cavalry was as useful in reality as it is in FOG2, no society would've ever bothered to spend a single dime on creating, training and maintaining cavalry units. We wouldn't be reading about any glorious cavalry charges at all, because horses would've been bred for food o...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

One thing that has always bugged me about FOG is the ability to peel off a unit or two of non-light foot to a block cavalry on a flank. This effectively shuts down a cavalry attack in most cases. It implies a degree and autonomy and flexibility that infantry of that time didn't possess, except mayb...

Re: Help wanted on how to use cavalry

Most here are discussing the characteristics of cavalry rather than their use.......and that information will also be very useful to the OP. I use Light Cavalry to scout, harass, and confuse my opponent. Try not to have them trapped in a static situation. Keep them to the Flanks Heavy cavalry are g...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

Well, what would be interesting to hear from our Ancients experts is how common it was for cavalry to charge formed infantry on the battlefield. In my readings and wargaming play in other periods, cavalry would fight cavalry and its main job was to banish the enemy cavalry from the battlefield. Cav...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?

In Pike and Shot and Sengoku Jidai, Mixed and Medium infantry couldn't charge cavalry, even when they were in combat. That caused some incredibly unrealistic and frustrating situations where cavalry units were physically preventing pike armed formations from moving through space that they were occu...

Re: Help wanted on how to use cavalry

I use all units opportunistically as seems fit. Which is of course too general to be practical advice, but just saying. Relative to its raw fighting power, Cavalry is overpriced, because you have to pay extra for the speed. That is the fundamental reason why is it difficult to use it efficiently; bu...

Unless autobroken, units can rally as often as the Dice God wishes.

Re: Subgenerals with Command Range 8?

I don´t quite understand this; shouldn´t SGs in a custom game have CR 4? No, the main infantry SG (if the infantry centre isn't commanded by the CinC) has 8 - otherwise it would often be impossible for his command range to cover the whole infantry centre. I seem to remember I had a few games with 2...

Re: Tournament Round II Army Comparison

Given the only semi-open map, I believe the armies are closely matched this round. Perhaps 55:45 in favour of Pyrrhus, but should be winnable for either side.

Just stop here to say that I miss the do not evade option of the FoG1
Did FoG1 also have an "always evade" option? I´d like that even better. :)

Re: Field of Glory II “Rise and Fall of Carthage” - Join the Tournament

1st tournament I have participated in. I completed a game in round 1 and won decisively, didnt receive updates for 2nd game and it looked like the 2nd game finished without any moves from me. The 2nd round started however I dont have an opponent. Q - is the server issue impacting 2nd round game set...

Re: Help wanted on how to use cavalry

AfaIk, Lancers, Cataphracts and Elephants never evade. Everything else that has four legs, always consider they may feel like evading. Cavalry combat is very fluid. Expect the unexpected.

Re: Help wanted on how to use cavalry

Armored doesn´t help much, likely, because they evade, anyway. Superior is good, though, because they shoot better.

Wearing enemy cavalry down from a distance, then charging them when they are fragmented, is nice.

Re: Tournament Round II Army Comparison

Agree, mostly.

On a very open map, I think the Carthaginians are toast; though the may try to swarm, perhaps.

If the terrain is more difficult, then, yes, their mediums might prevail.

Re: Field of Glory II “Rise and Fall of Carthage” - Join the Tournament

My opponent played 1 1/2 games quite speedily, but now nothing for a week; suppose he has dropped.

Probably going to get the BYE score for 2nd game; 10-15 pts less than a win, though. :(
