It's my anniversary with 50% off

Post by MarkShot »

I am reasonably familiar with FOG2, and I really think it is genius (although not a big TBS gamer). That's why it is genius, since it can be made to flow very smoothly for someone who does not like plodding game play.

But I didn't get this title as I have yet to finish FOG2; there is a lot there with DLC and user content.

But I do have 50% off.

So, is there anything really new about this title compared to FOG2 besides units/factions?

Any in depth Internet reviews? That I should watch?

Thanks!

Greetings, Richard. I have been away for a bit as I have been off in the world WWII Combat Mission and MIUS. There are times when one just needs to hear the soothing sound of an HMG-42 spitting 1500/min downrange or the comfort of a Tiger's tracks. :D

Besides the new units, factions, campaigns, epic battles, etc. :
- new graphics, new music, new UI = nice medieval atmosphere
- time warp (ancient vs medieval)

I am assuming the learning curve for someone who understands FOG2: POA, terrain, ZOCs, cohesion ...

Should be rather trivial? Like I could be up and playing within 1 day?

Thanks.

within 15 minutes, the time to have a look at the PoA tables and other rules... No big change.

The way I see it, FoG II games, like CM, aren't designed to be finished. They are more historical sandbox battle generators, with infinite replayability. The best way to look at it is whether or not the Medieval period is interesting to you. Ancients and Med are about the same difference as playing Battle for Normandy vs Cold War; same basic play style but different eras and units (or maybe BN vs Red Thunder until gunpowder is introduced into FoG).

At the moment, owning both games, I can immerse myself in battles spanning from the Assyrians all the way to the Teutonic knights and everything in between. That's one helluva chunk of military history to enjoy.

I did start taking classes in the low and high middle ages after playing a little CK2/3. But I am still more interested in Rome (pre-fall in the West) and WWII (the golden age of kinetic and explosive weapons). It think we have long since crossed into the digital battlefield; more than just comms and ciphers.

FOG2/FOG2M system is superb. Not just from a gamers perspective. I had been in systems, and it a very good case study in UI construction.

Looks like the other respondents have covered it.

Actually , in addition to the above, i think it is also visually better than fog2 the battlefields seem a bit more vivid.

I think that is a matter of taste. It is certainly different, but some people prefer the Ancients style.

Richard,

I bought the bundle purely based on the quality of FOG2.

When I bought FOG2, I was mainly buying Empires (as I don't play TBS games). But when I actually loaded the game up, I was simply amazed.

Thanks.

Still the gaming quality is all but identical and easily the best simulation of tabletop wargames that I’ve found.
